Around 4.30am, when most people were still in their pillows and blankets, my friends and I were ready to go. The destination was one: Matahari Terbit Beach, Sanur. The name alone makes you curious, right? The sunrise that signifies this place was designed by the universe to witness the beginning of a peaceful day.
We set off with our eyes a little heavy, the sound of the streets quiet, and the air still cold and almost damp. But strangely, there was a kind of excitement that stuck. Maybe it's because this isn't just an ordinary walk. It's about chasing a moment called Sunrise.
When I arrived at the beach, the sky was still dark with a tinge of purple and dark blue. But the rows of motorbikes and small cars in the parking lot were already visible. So we weren't the only ones who woke up early for this moment. As soon as our feet touched the cold sand, there was an unexplainable sense of excitement.
We chose to sit by the beach. The morning breeze gently brushed our faces, small waves came and went like a calm breath. The sky began to change color from a little orange, pink, then golden light appeared. And at that moment, all the tiredness of waking up early was gone. The sun appeared slowly behind the horizon, like opening the curtain of a new day.
Sunrise in Sanur is not just about the sun rising. It's about the atmosphere that comes with it. People sitting quietly, some with yoga mats, some going for a morning run, some like us: just sitting, being quiet, and enjoying. No noise, no notifications, no drama. Just nature and us.
What makes this experience even more perfect: fried food! Yes, you read that right. Near Matahari Terbit Beach, there are several vendors selling warm fried foods. Not just any fried food, but those served with petis seasoning, which is really addictive. My friends and I immediately bought some: stuffed tofu, bakwan, and tempeh. Everything is still warm and crispy. It's perfect to eat while sitting on the sand, watching the sun slowly rise.
The petis seasoning is very distinctive and tastes savory, sweet, slightly salty, and kicks on the tongue. If you like Javanese or Balinese dishes, you'll understand why petis seasoning can be a highlight. Even my friend who didn't like it at first, ended up adding it too. It's addictive and makes the morning atmosphere more mood on.
Near the beach is also Sanur Harbor. In the distance, small boats begin to move. Some are ready to leave for Nusa Penida or Nusa Lembongan. The view just adds to the atmosphere: life is constantly moving, but this morning, we were given time to be still for a while.
Oh yeah, we went to Sanur on a weekday, so it wasn't too crowded. That made it even more comfortable. After enjoying the sunrise, we didn't go straight home. We walked around the beach. It turns out that along the beach there are several small stalls that are starting to open. They sell hot coffee, light snacks, and some even have Balinese mixed rice.
We stopped by one of the stalls and sat for a while. While having coffee, we chatted with the owner who was very friendly. He told us that the sunrise in Sanur is already a favorite of many people, but it still has its own charm every day. “I never get bored watching the sunrise here,” he said with a smile.
That moment was unforgettable. There's a serenity that can't be found anywhere else. The sound of the gentle waves, the clean air, and the laughter of my friends made me want to go back to that day. We laughed carefree, talked about small things, and everything felt light. Sometimes happiness is as simple as that.
After that trip, I realized that waking up early in Bali is worth it for a vacation. Because by starting the day from early morning, we can have a lot of time from morning until night to explore Bali more. Sunrise is one of the best ways to refresh your mind. Seeing the sunrise and the vast expanse of the sea is like a natural refresher for a tired soul.
When I saw many people early in the morning heading to Sanur Harbor to catch a boat to Nusa Penida. Seeing that, I was inspired and immediately thought of going to Nusa Penida the next day. Sunrise in Sanur was like the beginning of a much wider journey.
For those of you who are interested in experiencing this moment, a tip from me: try to be on the beach before 5am. Because the most beautiful moments and the best light for photos or videos happen before the sun actually appears. Also, if you want to explore more, you can walk along the coastline from Matahari Terbit Beach to Mertasari Beach. But keep in mind, it's quite a long distance. Even so, if done with loved ones, the trip actually feels fun. There are many beautiful corners that you can find along the way, from small cafes, local stalls, to sitting spots facing the sea that are quiet and calm.
If asked, is it worth it to wake up at 4.30am just to see the sunrise?
I will answer: 100% WORTH IT.
Not just because the view is beautiful, but because it reminds us that even simple things can make us happy. No need for expensive cafes, no need for long vacations. Sitting with friends, eating fried food, and watching the sun rise is enough to recharge your heart and mind.
Sunrise in Sanur can be one of the ways. If you're tired, not in the mood, or just want to feel alive again, try coming here early in the morning. It's okay to bring a friend, or go alone. Because morning in Sanur has its own way to calm your heart and refresh your mind.
So, the next time you think twice about getting up early, just remember this story and this moment. Who knows, you'll also say, “It was worth it”.
